JIS Z 2801
JIS Z 2801: Antibacterial Products – Test for Antibacterial Activity and Efficacy
Overview
JIS Z 2801 is a widely recognized international standard for evaluating the antibacterial activity and effectiveness of products designed to inhibit the growth of bacteria on their surfaces. Originally established by the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS), this protocol is often used in microbiology testing laboratories to assess the performance of antibacterial coatings, materials, and products.
What Does JIS Z 2801 Test?
The JIS Z 2801 standard specifically measures the ability of a treated surface to prevent the growth of bacteria, comparing it to an untreated control. The test is typically performed using two representative bacterial strains:
- Staphylococcus aureus (gram-positive)
- Escherichia coli (gram-negative)
These bacteria are selected to represent a broad spectrum of microbial threats commonly encountered in various environments.
Testing Procedure
- Sample Preparation: Test samples are prepared by applying the antibacterial treatment to the product surface. Control samples remain untreated.
- Inoculation: A known concentration of bacterial suspension is applied to both treated and untreated samples.
- Incubation: Samples are incubated under specified conditions, usually at 35°C for 24 hours, allowing bacteria to interact with the surfaces.
- Recovery and Enumeration: After incubation, bacteria are recovered from the surfaces. The viable bacterial count is determined using standard microbiological plating techniques.
- Calculation of Antibacterial Activity: The reduction in bacterial count on the treated surface compared to the control indicates the antibacterial efficacy. This is expressed as a log reduction value.
Why Choose JIS Z 2801 for Antibacterial Testing?
- Internationally Recognized: JIS Z 2801 is accepted worldwide as a reliable method for assessing antibacterial effectiveness.
- Comprehensive Assessment: The standard evaluates both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, ensuring broad-spectrum analysis.
- Quantitative Results: Provides clear, numerical data to demonstrate antibacterial performance.
- Applicable to Many Products: Suitable for testing plastics, coatings, textiles, paints, and a variety of other materials.
